Government Announce New Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Grant for Residential Car Parks
12th May 2022
The government have recently announced their final release of grants for the residential sector surrounding the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and points.
The government say they want to help businesses and organisations who rent, lease or manage residential properties install EV chargepoints in their car parks. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) administers the grant on behalf of Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).
The full government guidance can be accessed here and outlines all of the eligibility requirements, rules & restrictions and how to apply for the grant by registering with the DVLA using the EV infrastructure grant for residential car parks registration form.
To save you some time, our team at Oakley have studied the announcement in detail and want to share the following key takeaways with you:
- This grant is for entities that rent, lease or manage residential properties (landlords) and want to install EV chargepoints on those properties.
- The EV infrastructure grant for residential car parks will provide money towards the infrastructure needed for chargepoints, as well as for installing the chargepoints themselves.
- There is a separate and different grant from the EV chargepoint grant for landlords, which does not help towards the cost of chargepoint infrastructure. Both grants may be used for the same site, but not the same chargepoints.
- You can receive up to 30 grants per financial year. The financial year runs from 6 April to 5 April the next year.
- Your property must be located in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Properties in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are not included.
- The property must be a multi-unit residential property, such as an apartment block or an estate consisting of multiple buildings sharing a common parking area. The car park must have at least 5 parking spaces that are clearly marked.
- The space where you install your chargepoint(s) and infrastructure must be private parking. You must own the land or have the sole legal right to it.
- All chargepoints claimed for under the grant must be on the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme approved chargepoint model list at the time of installation.
- The EV infrastructure grant for residential car parks covers the costs of installing the infrastructure needed for chargepoints to operate and for future chargepoints to be installed.
- Before you can apply for a grant, you must register with DVLA and get a landlord registration identification (ID) number.
- The amount available per grant is capped at £30,000
Please note, this is purely a summary of, what we consider, the most notable points from the announcement, however, we recommend reading the guidance in full to gain a thorough understanding of the terms and conditions before applying.
This is an exciting announcement for the UK residential sector and a positive step towards more sustainable transportation.
We will continue to monitor updates from the Government in regards to the new electric vehicle infrastructure grant and endeavour to keep you as up-to-date as possible.
